Some customers have asked, "Why is my bandwidth so high?" there are several reasons that affect bandwidth. The most common being general traffic. This is the kind of bandwidth problem you want to have. This means lots of people are coming to your web site to find out more about you, your products and services. The downside is bandwidth determines the hosting account and the amount you pay for it.
Here are some tips in reducing your bandwidth. Common instances that affect bandwidth are:
- Traffic From Other sites
- General Traffic
- FTP uploads and Downloads
- Large Emails
- Large image files on your server
- Videos and Audio Files on your server
Traffic From Other sites - The mostly un-noticed is traffic from other sites, not in the sense of search engines but other sites like My Space, Ifriends, Yahoo or google groups or any other free website page you may have to introduce traffic to your web server. A lot of times you want your logo or some image files to show up on your My Space page so you copy and paste the image URL to your My Space page. This means every visitor to your My Space page will use your actual web server bandwidth. That's a no no. If you upload the actual image to your My Space account or any other account you are using, then call the image or file from the My Space page (or other account) it will reduce your bandwidth dramatically. It often makes sense if you have free space on My Page, you should not pay for the bandwidth else where.
General Traffic - General traffic is a good thing and will not be covered too much as we want this kind of traffic. This usually comes from Search engines.
FTP uploads and Downloads - FTP Uploads and downloads are necessary in uploading changes to your site. When you want to upload files make sure you’re not uploading anything you don't need, after you have made changes to a file, (for example) called test.html. You want to see another version of it so you have test2.html, test3.html and so on. When you’re finished testing and completed the tweaks, delete the test files you are no longer using.
Large E-mails - Emails also contribute to bandwidth usage. Whenever possible use compression programs to zip up large files before sending them through e-mail. A better solution would be to FTP these files to the web server in a zipped format and letting someone download these files directly. This will reduce bandwidth.
Large Image Files - Try reducing the size of your images using an image editor, Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop, or fireworks etc. You can reduce the size of images but not lose any quality very easily in these programs. Sometimes saving an image in a .GIF over a .JPG will save bandwidth when a viewer sees the image or downloads it.
Large Video / Audio - The same for audio and video files. Usually if your site is going to contain large Video and or Audio files you will probably be on a package that allows ample space and bandwidth for these types of files.
How do I know what files are using the most bandwidth?
A good way to check out any statistical information regarding your web server would be your 'cPanel'. Log into your control panel either from your client manager at http://lynxxdirect.com/clients or http:yourdomain.com/cpanel
Under: LOGS Depending what package you have is a Statistical Log viewer with a graphical interface (GUI). The higher priced packages has a program called 'AWSTATS' this is an upgraded version with lots a unique tools. The lower priced packages have a stat program called 'Webalizer' or 'Analog Stats' This will give you some idea of what files are being accessed the most and from where. This will give you some indication as to what files and locations need to be addressed.
This is also a good indicator of what pages on your site receive the most traffic which will allow you to maximize your marketing budget or upkeep the content on that page. This will also tell you what search engines are worth looking into or need higher marketing budgets.
